Resettlement Planning, Livelihood Restoration and Land Access – Simandou Iron Ore Project
Providing integrated livelihood restoration and land access planning
Challenge
The Simandou Iron Ore Project—comprising the mine, a 650-kilometre trans-Guinean railway, deep-water export port and associated infrastructure—is one of the world’s largest integrated greenfield mining developments. Delivering the project required land access and resettlement systems capable of meeting international lender standards and maintaining community confidence and support across an extensive infrastructure corridor.
Approach
DT Global advised Rio Tinto on the planning and implementation of a large-scale resettlement and livelihood restoration program delivered in accordance with the project’s Resettlement Framework, the IFC Performance Standards and Rio Tinto’s internal requirements. Our multidisciplinary team supported socioeconomic surveys, asset inventories, compensation planning, livelihood restoration, stakeholder engagement, GIS-enabled information management and preparation of Resettlement and Compensation Action Plans.
As implementation progressed, DT Global designed an innovative hub-based delivery model that strengthened local engagement, improved operational efficiency and enhanced coordination with government and affected communities across the railway corridor.
Goals and Results
The assignment established an integrated framework for compensation and livelihood restoration that reduced project risk, strengthened delivery capability and provided Rio Tinto with practical systems capable of supporting one of the world’s most significant mining infrastructure developments.
