Challenge

Following serious human rights abuses associated with mine security operations, Barrick Gold sought to establish a credible, survivor-centered remedy mechanism aligned with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The initiative represented one of the mining sector’s earliest and most significant efforts to operationalize rights-compatible remedy in a complex operating environment.

Approach

DT Global partnered with Barrick Gold and the independent Porgera Remediation Framework Association to design and implement the complete remedy framework, including governance arrangements, confidential claims assessment, survivor support services, stakeholder coordination and delivery of integrated remedy packages through partnerships with financial institutions, healthcare providers, legal services and community organizations.

Goals and Results

The framework established an internationally recognized model for corporate accountability, demonstrating how transparent governance, community trust and effective remedy can strengthen long-term relationships between mining companies and affected communities.
