Building a positive, supportive, and engaging work culture

Lorraine Pagal is the People & Culture Coordinator for the Economic and Social Infrastructure Program (ESIP) in Papua New Guinea. In this Q&A, we ask Lorraine about her role, her biggest influences and why she is passionate about creating a workplace where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.

1. What is your current role with the Economic and Social Infrastructure Program (ESIP), and what do you do on a day-to-day basis?

I work as a People & Culture Coordinator supporting the ESIP program. My day-to-day responsibilities include coordinating recruitment activities, supporting onboarding processes, and working with managers to ensure the project has the right people and skills in place to achieve its goals. I also help coordinate employee wellbeing initiatives that promote a positive, supportive, and engaging workplace culture.

2. What project achievement, or moment, are you especially proud of while working on ESIP?

One of the achievements I’m most proud of is supporting the recruitment of key positions that contribute to the successful delivery of ESIP. It’s rewarding to see new employees join the program and know that my work has helped build a strong and capable team to support communities across Papua New Guinea.

3. What is the best thing about your job?

The best thing about my job is the opportunity to work with a diverse range of people and help connect talented individuals with meaningful roles. I enjoy knowing that the support I provide behind the scenes contributes to the broader impact ESIP is making.

4. What is something people may not know about your career journey?

Many people may not know that I started my career in sales. While working in that field, I realised that what I enjoyed most was connecting with people, understanding their needs, and building relationships. That experience eventually led me into the HR space, where I found a career that aligns with my strengths and passion for supporting people.

5. Who or what has had the biggest influence on the way you work?

I have been fortunate to work with many people who have influenced the way I work throughout my career. One person who stands out is my current manager, Natasha Austin, whose patience, understanding, and willingness to support others have had a lasting impact on me. She has shown me the importance of leading with empathy, listening to people, and creating an environment where individuals feel valued and supported.

6. If you could share one insight with someone starting out in your field, what would it be?

Never underestimate yourself. Be open to new opportunities and don’t be afraid to try different things. Not every path will be the perfect fit, but each experience helps you grow and brings you closer to finding what you’re truly passionate about.

7. What are you hoping to learn or achieve over the next few years?

I am passionate about creating positive workplace experiences where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. Over the next few years, I hope to develop my HR expertise further, connect with mentors and industry professionals, and continue growing in a career that allows me to make a meaningful difference in people’s working lives.

8. Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about or enjoy spending time on?

Outside of work, I enjoy balancing “me time” with quality time spent with family and friends. It’s important to look after yourself and take time to recharge, but life’s best moments are often shared with the people who matter most. I also love trying new things, learning new skills, and continuing to grow both personally and professionally.
