What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

We once invited a senior mining expert from South Africa to Nairobi to participate in a project interview with a client. The interview was more than three hours long, but the client did not direct any of their questions to the expert. After the interview, I apologized to the expert for not having the opportunity to participate in the meeting. I felt that we missed an opportunity to show his strong understanding of the sector. The expert responded by saying, “In my community in Zimbabwe, we say that it is always better to wear an oversized jacket than not to have one at all.” His point was of course about being overprepared rather than underprepared. I have always carried this me –valuable advice that I apply often.

What is the one thing in this world you are most proud of?

My children – Adelina, David, and Rahab.
