Fiji’s Advances, Innovations, and Leadership in Climate Change Action

11:00 AM11:50 AM UAE

Description

Since Fiji’s COP23 presidency, the country has taken several steps to advance both climate change adaptation and mitigation priorities and has emerged as a regional leader in developing innovative responses to climate change in the Pacific. This panel will give an opportunity to the Fiji delegation and other panelists to share experiences and lessons learned from Fiji’s ongoing climate change adaptation and mitigation initiatives and the country’s vision for climate change action into the future, including its long-term net zero strategy and priorities for regional coordination across the Pacific. The following key Fiji initiatives will be highlighted:

  • Adoption of the Fiji National Climate Finance Strategy, and NDC investment plans, to guide investment priorities for climate adaptation and mitigation.
  • Establishment of a Green Bond which catalyzed international private sector capital and showed promise as a sustainable source of finance to accelerate climate action.
  • Establishment of Fiji’s Taskforce on Access to Climate Finance, a COP 26 initiative, pioneered by 7 countries to strengthen Government decision-making procedures and to enable more coherent and effective support to Fiji’s climate change adaptation initiatives and green growth pathways.
  • The Drua Incubator, a sub-unit within Fiji’s Climate Change Division, dedicated to financial innovation and the development of ‘home-grown’ financing solutions and products with high impact potential to strengthen climate resilient economic development. Initiatives supported include low-cost parametric livelihood insurance products, a small grants scheme to address loss and damage, the Pacific region’s first Blue Bond, and Fiji’s Climate Relocation Trust fund, to name a few.
